Best Ever Platforming Games

The cream of the crop. The best of the best. No matter how you slice it, the following games are considered some of the best platformer video games ever.

Anubis II (Nintendo Wii)

In the riveting sequel to the sleeper hit Anubis, the spooky spirit called Mumm'hotep has plunged all of Egypt into darkness. Anubis has once again been summoned to put a stop to Mumm'hotep and his minions. Anubis must use all his tricks to navigate the complex, sprawling topography and challenging gauntlet of rooms and caves. Anubis II is exactly the kind of treasure that is hiding in plain sight on the store shelves with games for the Nintendo Wii. It has an inspired character with an intriguing premise and an ultimately memorable experience from beginning to end.

Total Recall (NES)

Total Recall was a radical departure from the standard NES movie tie-in game. It was a unique, beautifully-animated platformer that closely followed the events of the hit Schwarzenegger movie. It has been universally praised by critics and gamers alike for its smooth controls and innovative physics. The oxygen factory level in particular is not only well-drawn, but is also noted as being one of the most forgiving and fair levels in platformer video games; any mistakes made are a result of the level's inherent challenge, and not because of poorly designed jumps.

Bubsy In 3-D (Sony PlayStation)

The Bubsy games of the 16-bit era featured colourful, cartoony graphics, entertaining voice samples from veteran cartoon voice actor Rob Paulsen sprinkled throughout the game, and tightly focused controls. Bubsy's foray into the 32-bit era proceeded to take everything that made Bubsy a good platformer, and soar to new heights.

Bubsy 3-D had the titular bobcat give running commentary on the level you were in a soothing, pleasantly charming voice. This playful banter charmed gamers everywhere as Bubsy bounced a whimsical abstract 3-D landscape. The in-game camera deserves special mention, as it would helpfully move into advantageous positions every time Bubsy landed on platforms. This game was so well received that is has become a cult classic. However, despite the clamouring of Bubsy fans, Bubsy In 3-D was the game's only appearance in the 32-bit era.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

Super Mario Bros. 3 was considered to be the best platformer of its time, and it still feels fresh today. There's more than the usual left-to-right progression in a level; some stages require movement from bottom to top and right to left. There are also levels where the screen automatically scrolls, which means you must continually move to keep up with the action. Super Mario Bros. 3 is a very addictive game that encourages multiple playings even today.
