5 Tips for Beautiful Engraving

Laser engraving has become a preferred method for adding a "special touch" to a variety of items that can truly make it stand out. Because the engraver can be used on a variety of surfaces, there are quite a few enhancements that can be added to really make the engraving unique. Here are just a few ideas to make your next engraving your best!

Laser Foil-this is the perfect accent for things such plaques or anniversary gifts. Instead of engraving into the surface, the foil can be added to the item and then the engraving takes place directly on it. Engravers who are more skilled may want to actually remove the background with their engraver and leave the logo or wording in the color of the foil. This creates a true, dramatic effect.

Stencils-these are great to use for consistency. Engravers who want to produce the same product repeatedly can use these when making their engravings. One word of caution when using stencils is to make sure they are "laser-friendly." Stencils not made specifically for laser engraving can burn and emit harmful chemicals into the air.

Onyx and Marble-we have all seen those beautiful engravings on both marble and onyx. When the laser is used on these surfaces, it burns away the top layer and reveals the white colored stone under the surface. This is the perfect surface to use for a memorial or something similar as it is classy, elegant, and timeless.

Wood-this is a common surface for engraving and each type of wood will create its own effect. American Alder is generally regarded as one of the better woods for laser engraving. However, woods such as Mahogany, Rosewood, Maple, and Walnut are also popular. A tip for wood engraving is that harder woods create darker engravings, offering more contrast in the finished product.

Stones-these offer a fun way to present gifts to friends and family. If you own your own engraver, they are something that can be offered to customers for very little investment. Try to pick stones that have a completely flat surface. The result when engraving stones will be very similar to marble and onyx in that the surface will have a bleached look to it after the engraving is complete. However, since the engraving will not go deep into the surface, we recommend using a darker stone as it will be difficult to apply any type of paint or coloring because the etching will not be that deep.
